Flu and Pneumonia Vaccines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people age 65 and older, and any younger person with high-risk conditions, receive the influenza vaccine before being discharged from the hospital. Please ask your nurse about receiving the flu vaccine, which is available in this hospital between Sept. 1 and Apr. 2. The flu vaccine is paid for by Medicare.

The CDC also recommends that the same group of people receive a vaccine to prevent pneumonia before leaving the hospital. There are two pneumonia vaccines, and you may need just one or both of them (a year apart). These vaccines are available year round and are paid for by Medicare. Ask your doctor which vaccines are recommended for you.
